Almost There

We hope our Reece's Rainbow status will soon change from "Almost There" to "Traveling Now".  We should find out tomorrow when we'll be traveling out of country for our girls.  My heart is bursting with excitement to meet them, hug them, hold them, and tell them how much they are loved.

O.R.P.H.A.N. Ministry - Raising Awareness

Back on October 19th, I posted an introducing a vision for coordinating a ministry related to Orphan and Adoptive/Foster Family Care; using the acrostic O.R.P.H.A.N. With this post, we'll take a look at:

Raising Awareness about the “plentiful harvest” and need for “workers”

Matthew 9:35-38 - 35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

  • Do we realize how many orphans exist:
    • in the world?
    • in the U.S.?
    • in the state we live in?
    • in our local community?

    • Do we realize the conditions many of these orphans live in and the type of care they receive?

    • Why do you think the “laborers are few”?

    Angel Tree Project 2011

To all of my Facebook friends - Please read this!

Reece's Rainbow (RR) is a ministry that advocates for children with down syndrome and other special needs (the ministry we're going through).  Each year they promote the Christmas Angel Tree Project.  Who are the angels?  All orphans with down syndrome from ages 0-5 are posted on one page for people to sponsor and donate towards their adoption grants.  The goal of this project is to raise $1000 for each orphan between November 1 and December 31.  We are prayer warriors for Katelyn, and you can read about her here.  Sixty dollars have been raised for her so far.  If you donate $35, RR will send you a Christmas ornament with her picture.

Have you ever seen/read this quote:

"We learned that orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you see their faces. It is easier to pretend they're not real before you hold them in your arms. But once you do, EVERYTHING changes."

David Platt in his book Radical

I want to make a challenge to all of my Westminster Presbyterian brothers and sisters.  I plan to donate $35 dollars to Katelyn's adoption fund TODAY!  Will you join me?  Will you consider $35 from your budget this month?  Will you place an ornament with her picture on your tree and commit to pray for her?  She was in the same orphanage as Gayle, but has been transferred out of the baby house orphanage due to her age.  She needs a family quickly.  Share this with as many people as you know.  The power of prayer is amazing, and increasing her adoption fund might encourage a family to bring her home.

Please go here and scroll to the bottom to find Katelyn.  While you are scrolling through the page, make time to look over the faces of these precious gifts of God...

    THANK YOU!

    Orphan "Everyday"

    Hebrews 13:8-16

8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. 10We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. 11For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Posing a reflective question to the "man in the mirror" (i.e., me)...

Yesterday was "Orphan Sunday"; a day where the visible church turns its "spotlight" on the mission that is caring for the orphan/fatherless.

So, how does the 1-day "event" that is Orphan Sunday become part of our daily lifestyle?

Maybe I should go back and really, really ponder what Jesus means when He says "Follow Me"...
